Chapter Twenty-one

I opened my eyes and stared at the wall without seeing it. My mind was brimming with memories of the dream I had just experienced. I was reeling from what had occurred while I had been asleep.

The Queen had been in my nightmare. No. She had transformed my nightmare into something that was not frightening. She had taken my hands, and I had felt safe.

I turned my head and looked at the empty goblet on my bedside table. There was not a single drop of the dream potion left. I had drunken everything.

I rubbed my cheek. Was this The Queen’s doing? Had she somehow manipulated the dream potion so that she would appear in my dream? Was that even possible?

Perhaps. I reckoned that anything was possible in Eventide Queendom, but somehow I doubted that The Fae Queen would do that. She would not manipulate the events like that. No. I didn’t believe that.

She had said that the crushed midnight berries would create a scenario in which I felt completely safe, but that I was responsible for the person appearing in that scenario. And the person to appear, had been The Fae Queen. Now what did that say about me?

That I trust her, I thought to myself as I slipped out of bed and stretched my arms high above my head. Despite whom- and what- she is, I trust her.

I trusted her enough to make her appear in my nightmare. And I trusted her enough to believe that she wouldn’t have done something to the dream potion to make her appear in my nightmare.

But it didn’t hurt to check. Just to make sure. I would make a point of looking at her during breakfast to see if I could detect any traces of… anything on her face. And if I got a moment alone with her, I would discreetly ask her if it was possible for someone to do something to the dream potion. Without accusing her of anything, of course. I just wanted to know, that was all.

Because as much as I had expected my father to appear in my dream, I was not upset that it had been The Fae Queen instead. She had been so kind to me. Had spoken so gently and held my hands so softly.

She had- I laughed quietly to myself- been kinder than she was in real life. And I found that to be quite amusing. If it truly was me who had made her up in my dream, I was being quite naïve in my sleep.

But perhaps I was being a little unkind now. The Fae Queen had been quite nice to me last night. She had answered my all my questions, she had been concerned about my nightmares. And she hadn’t even gotten angry when I had come barging in while she was bathing. I could imagine that most people would have been, but she hadn’t. Not at all.

Scratching my chin, I decided not to wait for Avalon this morning. I was most eager to talk to The Queen, and I was much too impatient to wait for the ‘maid’.
